We are now part of the FCP Diigo group so what you have tagged and saved needs to be shared with your group members through Diigo. Some of you have not saved any sources to your Diigo-if you don't know how, please ask, and if you haven't found anything please work on that today because adding information to the collective wiki will require citation and if you have no sources this will be difficult to do.

What's with the Wiki?
Let's look at the bigger picture

Watch Web Search Strategies in Plain English

What did you learn?

If you paid close attention to the video, you should now know how to reduce your number of search results by:
  • adding search terms
  • searching for specific phrases
  • removing unwanted words

Learn the 3 Boolean Search Operators

Use Boolify to Learn How Boolean Logic Works in Google

1. Start by going to Boolify
2. Use the puzzle pieces to link your search terms using AND, OR, and NOT
3. Look below the puzzle board to see what your search would look like in Google
  • Notice how Boolify puts quotes around phrases for you
  • Notice that AND is represented by spaces between words (not in quotes)
  • Notice how Boolify changes NOT to a minus sign (-) right in front of the word (touching it, like this -word.to.eliminate)
  • Notice that you still need to use capital letters for OR when searching in Google
4. How low can you go? - see if you can create a search specific enough to get your results down to 50 or fewer

Check your understanding of Boolean Searches

Go to the Boolean Machine website
BEFORE you put your cursor over the words AND, OR, and NOT, predict how the Venn diagram will be filled in
See if you're right - Check with your neighbor if you don't understand why the answer is what it is

1. ADD TO THE WIKI! Be smart! Don't plagarize! Use your original thoughts :)
Must be done by today!

Practice and Add to Your Diigo "Basket"

2. Use Boolean Logic and phrase searches in Google to find additional resources on your topic and subtopic
  • For example, if I'm on team 7D, my topic is Google and Government, Politics, and Employment
  • So one query (aka search string) I could try would be: google government OR politics -google.com -.gov
3. Your task today is to add at least 10 really useful and specific resources on your topic to your Diigo library

As always . . .

Check your iGoogle page for recent activity on the wiki and the Ning
Respond to any communications you've received and add to the discussions

Now What reflection based on classmates feedback comments on topic.

Feedback Implementation

Use the written feedback from your classmates to contribute to the wiki but also continue meaningful research-put it in your basket and be sure you are sharing your bookmarked docs with members of the Flat Classroom Project.

Search, Save, Read, Write

Continue researching until you've saved 10 items to Diigo - with description and 3 or more tags
Read the research you and others have saved with your topic tags
Draft your wiki page contribution in Google Docs
You must post at least one significant contribution to your wiki page by the end of class on Wed!

Wednesday, October 20th 2010

check-in and Catch UpSee the 21c GL Progress Chart (shared to you in Google Docs by Mia)
Green = tasks that still need to be completed
Yellow = areas for improvement
Pink = suggestions/new challenges
Blue = ready to be re-checked
After you've completed something, please change it to blue

Search, Save, Read, Write

Continue researching until you've saved 10 items to Diigo
Include descriptions and at least 3 tags: flatclassroomproject, topic standard tag, one or more of your choice
Read the research you and others have saved with your topic tags
Draft your wiki page contribution in Google Docs
You must post at least one significant contribution to your wiki page by the end of class on Wed!

Search Strategies

Remember to use multiple key words with Boolean operators (OR & -) and put quotation marks around phrases
Instead of lots of ORs, you can also use a tilde (~) to search for synonyms (put the tilde right in front of the word, no space)
If you come across a term you don't know, you can look it up using define:wordyoudon'tknow
To search within a particular website, such as The New York Times, include site:nytimes.com in your search string

If you did not finish highlighting the progress chart please do so at the beginning of class.

You need to add images to your wiki pages-the images must be creative commons licensed and attributed.

Watch the Flat Classroom Project Keynote Address from David Warlick
Add a thoughtful, substantive response in the comments below the video
Be sure to add your own ideas to the discussion
In other words, go beyond restating what you agree with or like about his message

Did you add an image to the wiki? Was it relevant? Was it CC licensed? Did you attribute? Have any of the moderators left you comments? Please make this your second and major task for today. If there are images you may want to use later in your video project please save them!

The following is not an optional assignment. It is imperative that you go back to the information and even if you paraphrased materials that you properly reference and site any ideas or materials used. :)

Add References to the information you contributed to the wiki

All information you've added to the wiki needs to be cited using a ref tag for each source

Hi guys. I am sorry I am out again today. I just want to tell you how proud I am of you. Listening to you talk to Ms. Moorman yesterday made me so proud like a mama bear. Each of you is such a cool and unique person and I have felt so privileged to be your teacher this semester. This is a great experience for you, and I realize not everyone in the project is as savvy as all of you are but I am confident in the end you will be satisfied with the products you are a part of. Thank you for your patience with me and the project! With that said: Please try and "clean" up your wiki pages today keeping in mind the rubric that you used yesterday which is hyperlinked above.
Have a great halloween weekend! Talia, MJ, and Scott have a wonderful and safe trip to Alabama. Soak all of it in, and experience the path of Civil Rights in America.
